"Born in England, Anna Louisa Walker (1836-1907) came to Lower Canada as a child with her family. In 1858, after settling in Sarnia, Ontario, "Annie" and her two sisters opened a private school for young ladies which closed a few years later when Frances and Isabella died. She then joined the Paris household of her second cousin, the well-known Victorian writer, Margaret Oliphant, as a companion-housekeeper. In Canada, where she anonymously published her first book, LEAVES FROM THE BACKWOODS (1861), Annie is probably best known as the author of the hymn, "Work, for the Night is Coming." On her cousin's advice, she shifted from writing poetry to novels. In 1884 she married the wealthy Harry Coghill (c1824-1897) and subsequently published as "Mrs. Harry Coghill" or simply, "Mrs. Coghill." Her last work was to edit and compile THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY AND LETTERS OF MRS. M.O.W. OLIPHANT (1899). Widowed in 1897, Annie died ten years later.
