Born in Nagasaki, Japan, Shungiku (also romanized Shungicu) Uchida (the pen name of Shigeko Uchida) is a prolific writer, *manga-ka*, actress, and cult celebrity. Film and televeision have adapted her work. She won a Japanese literary prize for two bestsellers: The prose semi-autobiographical *Fatherfucker*, which details the abuse she suffered as a child, and a manga series *We Are Reproducing*, about pregnancy and single motherhood.
