Ignace J. Gelb
<a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ignace_Gelb>Ignace Jay Gelb</a> was born in eastern Europe, took his PhD in Rome, and his professorship in Assyriology in Chicago where he pioneered the study of writing systems.
