Joyce Brothers
Also known as
Joyce Diane Bauer was born in New York City, the daughter of two attorneys who joint-owned a law practice. After receiving both a B.A. and an M.A. degree from Cornell University, she received a Ph.D. degree in Psychology from Columbia University. She married Dr. Milton Brothers, an internist, in 1949, and they had a daughter. Brothers became famous in 1955 when she won the television game show "The $64,000 Question" with a question about boxing. Following her win, she became the color commentator for CBS during the boxing match between Carmen Basilio and Sugar Ray Robinson, the first woman ever to do color commentary on boxing. In 1958, she had her own show on a New York television station, where she took questions from the audience and gave advice about relationships, making her probably the first television psychologist. She went on to host other advice shows on both television and radio, and her broadcasting career has lasted more than four decades. In addition to broadcasting, she has written a monthly column in Good Housekeeping magazine for almost forty years, and a syndicated newspaper column that she began writing in the 1970s. She has also published several best-selling books, including "What Every Woman Should Know About Men," (1982) and "Widowed," (1992), which was inspired by the loss of her husband. Today, she continues to do guest appearances on television and radio talk shows.
