The first adventure playground in the UK was established in Notting Hill and founded by an ex paratrooper Pat Smythe. At that time post war UK had plenty of bombsites and slum clearance that offered ample space for adventure playg and they were established in numerous locations around the UK. Camden Council's Parks and Highways department supported the concept and established a Play division with a strong emphasis on adventure play . The book chronicles the development of Community Play Centres, the first being Fairfield in Camden Town London established in 1964
