Die Natur ist für die Künstlerin nicht nur Inspirationsquelle, sondern wird oft zu einem technischen Bestandteil ihres Schaffens, wie zum Beispiel die Gezeiten der kroatischen Adria, die in der Bilderserie „Zeitraum zwischen Ebbe und Flut" die mit Kohle beschichteten Leinwände umspülen, oder die Sonne Südafrikas, mit deren Hilfe Gerlinde Thuma Cyanotypien anfertigt.
