一九二六年,随着顾颉刚先生编著的"古史辨"第一册出版,书首六万多字的自序也引起了学术界的轰动.在这篇自传性的长序中,顾先生从时势,个性,境遇等方面畅言自己所以有"古史层累地造成"这一见解的原因以及研究古史的方法.这篇序不仅成为研究顾先生学术工作的第一手资料,也成为研究新文化运动的第一手资料.因此它问世之后,随即在海外先后被译为英文,日文;同时在国内也被收入三十年代出版的"新文学大系"以及日后的多种文集,越来越受到人们的关注.今年适值"古史辨"第一册出版八十周年,中华书局特将该书自序手稿影印出版,以示纪念.当初,顾先生手稿中原有一部分内容是论述孟姜女故事如何随着时间和地域的不同而发生变化,以作为他研究古史方法的旁证,由于有三万多字,似"犯了腹蛊之疾,把前后文隔断了"(自序语),只得从序文中删去,独立为"孟姜女故事研究"发表.现在,这份影印件又恢复了自序的原貌."古史辨"第一册出版后,顾先生曾亲手抄录若干来信,保存于"古史辨材料"册中,从未发表.鉴于这些信件的史料价值,故附于此书之末.
