For the narrator of In Search of Lost Time , the translated sound; moreover, he defines the task of the writer as that of a translator. From then on, between sound and literary language, there is a close parallel but also a small gap, so that a vanishing point fits in the text: the writer translates a sound already translated itself. What to do with all these strata of sound when we try to make them in a language other than French? What does the practice of translation reveal in the way Proust thinks of the relationship between sonority and language?
