Description

This book is a study of the largest statue of Greek antiquity, the Colossus of Rhodes. No remnants of the statue have survived, and its precise location has long been lost. This study considers the new proposal that places the Colossus of Rhodes in the "Temple of Pythian Apollo" on the acropolis of Rhodes. Archaeological evidence found at that site can be interpreted as the rest of the workshop and the base of the statue. The study also explores the popular image of the Colossus as a harbor-straddling guardian -- an image that originated not in antiquity, but around the end of the 14th century in Rhodes, and that was popularized by 16th-century artists.
