Marguerite Frey-Surbek (1886-1981) war eine Meisterin der Lichtakzente und schuf, geprägt durch ihre 'Lehrjahre' bei Paul Klee und die bunte Pariser Atmosphäre zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts, Bilder von subtiler Luftigkeit und vitalem Kolorit. Es wird deutlich, welch virtuose Malerin sie war, die als sensible Beobachterin wie auch als engagierte Zeitzeugin Spuren hinterliess. Victor Surbek (1885-1975) kam nach Studien in München und Karlsruhe 1909 zur Weiterbildung nach Paris, wo er seine zukünftige Frau kennenlernte. Er entwickelte, nach stark von Ferdinand Hodler beeinflussten Anfängen, einen persönlichen Stil in betonter Flächigkeit und erreichte später eine eindrückliche lyrische Bildwirkung -- vor allem in den Landschaften und Nachtbildern.
