"El objeto de este libro es el estudio de la historia del Banco de Barcelona en la primera fase de su existencia, es decir, desde su fundación en 1844 hasta que perdió el privilegio de emisión en 1874. El Banco de Barcelona fue la primera entidad bancaria que tomó la forma de sociedad anónima en Cataluña y la tercera en España. Hasta 1874 detentó en exclusiva el derecho de emisión de billetes en la provincia de Barcelona. Fue, pues, una pieza central y básica del sistema financiero catalán durante la etapa decisiva de la primera industrialización de Cataluña."
