Description

World Cinema's 'Dialogues' with Hollywood looks at the way Hollywood has interacted with a range of national and transnational cinemas. It considers how Hollywood has acted both as a magnate for the talent of the world's cinema and as a critical foil for filmmakers questioning the imperial power of the US. From German Expressionism at the start of the twentieth century to East Asian martial arts movies at the start of the twenty-first, the contributors show the profound impact that Hollywood has had upon the history of the medium. At times it seems that if there is a 'dialogue' to be identified it is one where the US majors have done all the talking. However, as this volume highlights throughout, this is far from the case. Indeed, it is impossible to understand the development of mainstream North American cinema without understanding the economic, aesthetic and political influence on it from the rest of the world.
