Description
Das Kunstmuseum St.Gallen wurde 2013 mit einer ausserordentlichen Schenkung bedacht: Dr. med. René und Lotti Gürtler vermachten ihre erstrangige Sammlung, über 150 Holz und Metallikonen aus dem 16. bis 19. Jahrhundert sowie rund dreissig Kleinantiquitäten, eine kostbare slawische Handschrift und gotische Skulpturen, dem St.Galler Museum, um sie in ihrer Gesamtheit zu erhalten. Während mehr als fünf Jahrzehnten trugen sie mit Akribie und Leidenschaft postbyzantinische Kultbilder zusammen. Die Ikone - das griechische Wort Eikon bedeutet Bild, Abbildung, Ebenbild - besitzt in der orthodoxen Kirche eine zentrale Bedeutung. Auf Wunderlegenden beruhend fungiert sie als Mittler zwischen Diesseits und Jenseits. Nach dem Zerfall des byzantinischen Reichs fand sie besonders in Russland, aber auch in Griechenland und auf dem Balkan eine vielfältige Weiterentwicklung. Exhibition: Kunstmuseum St.Gallen, 9.
