Erano le otto postmeridiane dell'8 settembre 1943. L'Italia accese i fuochi, suonò le campane, cantò e ballò nelle aie e nelle piazze. Ma l'euforia durò poco. Nelle caserme gli ufficiali parlarono alla truppa, le compagnie si sciolsero e, come scrisse Meneghello, le strade si affollarono di "due file praticamente continue di gente, di qua andavano in su, di là in giù, pareva che tutta la gioventù italiana di sesso maschile si fosse messa in strada, una specie di grande pellegrinaggio di giovanotti". Tutti a casa? Non proprio: sarebbe stato troppo bello. In realtà l'8 settembre fu uno dei giorni più enigmatici e tragici della storia politica, sociale e militare d'Italia.
