Le 7e art, dès sa naissance, a montré sa capacité à susciter toutes sortes de réactions, spontanées ou savantes, émerveillées ou inquiètes, rendant compte du rapport singulier qui se tisse entre le film et son spectateur. Ce qu'on interroge ici en priorité, ce sont donc moins les discours professionnels que l'expérience du cinéma au sens large, telle qu'elle se vit à de multiples niveaux : chez le spectateur cultivé, fasciné ou révulsé, mais rarement indifférent ; chez les critiques bien sûr, dans les moments particuliers où, face à des oeuvres inattendues, leurs convictions esthétiques sont ébranlées ; enfin, chez le spectateur ordinaire, dont le goût fut longtemps ignoré alors que son expérience est par excellence le terrain où s'observent les échos et les effets du cinéma dans la société.
