Kunst als uitdrukking van de mens en zijn omgeving. Academische regels werden ingeruild voor subjectieve ervaringen. In Duitsland manifesteerde het expressionisme zich aan het begin van de 20ste eeuw in het werk van leden van de kunstenaarsgroeperingen "Brücke" en "Der Blaue Reiter". Bevrijd van de zichtbare werkelijkheid zochten kunstenaars als Alexej von Jawlensky, Wassily Kandinsky, Emil Nolde, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Franz Marc en Max Pechstein naar nieuwe schilderkunstige middelen om hun visie vast te leggen. Ongekend felle kleuren en krachtige vormen werden de dragers van ideeën en emoties. Daarmee stonden de Duitse expressionisten aan de basis van de moderne schilderkunst.
