Fadette's father dies, then, she lives with her grandmother, a cantankerous old woman. Everybody treats Fadette as a little witch but the twin brothers Landry and Sylvinet love her very much. Comme il marchait la tête basse et les yeux fichés en terre, il sentit quelqu'un qui lui tapait l'épaule, et se retournant il vit la petite-fille de la mère Fadet, qu'on appelait dans le pays la petite Fadette, autant pour ce que c'était son nom de famille que pour ce qu'on voulait qu'elle fût un peu sorcière aussi. Vous savez tous que le fadet ou le farfadet, qu'en d'autres endroits on appelle aussi le follet, est un lutin fort gentil, mais un peu malicieux. On appelle aussi fades les fées auxquelles, du côté de chez nous, on ne croit plus guère. Mais que cela voulût dire une petite fée, ou la femelle du lutin, chacun en la voyant s'imaginait voir le follet, tant elle était petite, maigre, ébouriffée et hardie. C'était un enfant très causeur et très moqueur, vif comme un papillon, curieux comme un rouge-gorge et noir comme un grelet.
