Outre les tribulations de sa captivité, Staden faisait la description minutieuse des us et coutumes des Indiens. Son livre connut un succès immédiat et fut traduit en de nombreuses langues aux XVIe et XVIIe siècles. La traduction ici reprise est celle parue en 1837.
