It's never been done, but it's desperately needed. 'What we want has never been done' explores the route to a fully integrated construction process; whereby all parties are jointly able to realize projects with a major social impact with an eye to each other's interests. In practice, a truly integrated approach often gets stuck in a wish scenario, because the world of planning and building can be unruly. Nevertheless, if the Netherlands is to tackle the major spatial challenges of the coming decades, integral cooperation is crucial. An extra million houses, energy transition, mobility, economic growth, climate adaptation: these are just a few of the urgent tasks that are in the waiting room. Only on the basis of a shared vision of the future and with a coordinating arm from The Hague can the Netherlands combine social prosperity with a sustainable living environment in the coming decades. Integral building must and must now is the thesis of this publication, an initiative of De Bouwagenda. It is a practical book, with examples of large and small construction projects where an integrated approach has indeed succeeded in parts. A handbook from which every alderman, city planner, project developer, policy officer, architect, builder, engineer, financier or environmental group can draw inspiration. This book shows that building a million homes is possible and, perhaps just as importantly, it indicates where they can be built. What we want has never been done, but now is the time. 'Wat wij willen is nog nooit gedaan' verkent de route naar een volledig integraal bouwproces; waarbij alle partijen gezamenlijk met oog voor elkaars belang projecten met grote maatschappelijke impact weten te realiseren. Een echte integrale aanpak blijft in praktijk nogal eens steken in een wensscenario, omdat de wereld van plannen en bouwen weerbarstig kan zijn. Toch, als Nederland de grote ruimtelijke uitdagingen van de komende decennia het hoofd wil bieden, is integraal samenwerken cruciaal. Een miljoen huizen extra, energietransitie, mobiliteit, economische groei, klimaatadaptie: het zijn slechts een paar van de urgente opgaves die in de wachtkamer zitten. Alleen vanuit een gedeelde toekomstsvisie en met een regisserende arm vanuit Den Haag kan Nederland de komende decennia sociale voorspoed combineren met een duurzame leefomgeving. Integraal bouwen moet en het moet nu is de stelling van deze publicatie, een initiatief van De Bouwagenda. Het is een praktisch boek, met voorbeelden van grote en kleine bouwprojecten waar een integrale aanpak op onderdelen wel degelijk is gelukt.
