"Monteiro's work was influenced by a number of different styles and movements: futurism, cubism, Japanese woodblock prints, African tribal art, Brazilian baroque, indigenous art from Marajó island, and the School of Paris (he was the finest Brazilian representative of the latter). He was also a poet, participated in the Semana de Arte Moderna 1922, and became, over the following decades, one of the most accomplished Brazilian artists of this century.
