The consequences of nuclear terrorism

Description

Identifies the probable broader consequences resulting from a terrorist group detonating a nuclear device. These include increased security at nuclear facilities; a crackdown on all terrorists; intensified debate over nuclear disarmament and energy; increased pressure for a new international regime to ensure security of nuclear facilities and material; increased pressure by suppliers of nuclear technology including suspension of cooperation in their nuclear programs, suspension of fuel shipments, suspension of reprocessing services; resistance to such measures by some countries that perceive this as intended to establish a permanent nuclear hegemony; and acceptance of international security measures by other countries that fear they may in the future be the victims of nuclear blackmail and internationalized security is their best protection. Finally, there would be renewed attention to strategic topics of signature, paramilitary nuclear attack, clandestine delivery, and civil defense.
