Description
A technique is developed to yield a climatology of high altitude balloon trajectories. For a launch position at Chico, Calif., this technique is employed to obtain the distribution of balloon positions, at the end of designated travel-times at 90,000 feet, for seven 2-week periods during the summer. Probability ellipses for these balloon positions are presented. In light of optimum conditions for conducting an experimental series employing a large instrumented balloon payload system, the best and poorest 2-week periods are determined. Specific examples of balloon recovery problems are presented and then solved using bivariate statistics.
