Auch Fritz Billeter geht von der Grundthese aus, dass zwischen Kunst und Gesellschaft ein ständiger Austausch stattfindet. Er betrachtet in dem vorliegenden Essay diese Wechselwirkung beispielhaft unter dem Aspekt des Seismografischen. So, wie der Seismograf als Instrument des Geologen Erschütterungen, Verwerfungen, Erdbeben aufzeichnet, so macht die seismografische Kunst auffällige Wechsel, Brüche und Spannungen in der Gesellschaft bildhaft sichtbar.
