Description
In 1908 schilderde Piet Mondriaan (1872-1944) het Portret van een meisje in rood. Sinds kort staat vast dat dit 'meisje' kunstenares Agatha Zethraeus (1872-1966) is. De Zweeds Nederlandse Zethraeus stond niet alleen model voor Mondriaan, maar was ook een oud-leerlinge en vriendin. De twee hadden mogelijk een amoureuze affaire en hielden tot zijn dood contact. In de jaren dat Mondriaan zich ontwikkelde van het impressionisme tot de abstractie, verdiende Zethraeus haar brood als schilderes van figuratieve landschappen, stillevens en stadsgezichten. De ontdekking van een serie doeken uit Zethraeus' nalatenschap, vormde de aanleiding tot onderzoek naar de kunstenares. Dat resulteerde in de tentoonstelling Agatha Zethraeus - Vriendin, leerling en model van Piet Mondriaan waarin de band tussen Zethraeus en Mondriaan centraal staat.
