Many scholars and obervant Jews assume that rabbinic Judaism includes a dogmatic commitment to the notion that the Bible text, particularly the Torah text, is letter perfect. This study offers a very different picture of the textual reality.

The accepted scholarly notion that the consonantal text of the Hebrew Bible was set at the latest by the first or second century of the Common Era derives from the study of the Qumran, Wad Murabba'at, and Nahal Hever manuscripts and others so-called Dead Sea Scrolls; from some early Bible citations and translations; and from various dicta culled from rabbinic literature.
