Josef Scharl (1896-1954) zählt zu den bedeutenden Künstlern der 1920er- und frühen 1930er-Jahre in Deutschland. Als Grenzgänger zwischen Expressionismus und Neuer Sachlichkeit schuf er ein malerisches OEuvre, das die politischen und sozialen Verwerfungen der Moderne eindringlich widerspiegelt. In seinen Porträts, Figurenbildern und Landschaften verbinden sich Kritik mit Empathie, Nüchternheit mit Pathos und Kargheit mit einem Hang zum Ornamentalen. Der Katalog würdigt Scharls eigenwillige Bildsprache anhand von rund 50 Hauptwerken, die überwiegend in seinen Münchener Jahren bis zur Emigration in die USA 1938 entstanden.
