You can only conclude that Jan Vosters plays with nature, with paint and with our perception. It is inherent in people's imagination that they can see signs in the natural environment. That is giving meaning: interpreting things as a sign. We do this constantly. Calling the horizon horizon, while we know that the land beyond it continues. Calling a cloud threatening, the land inhospitable, a tree lonely, the light ominous - all are examples of how we attribute characteristics to nature, which is basically indifferent to the creatures that walk around in it. This is the true subject of Jan Vosters' art. It is the grand stage where he is in his element. Making the seemingly familiar puzzling, raising the question of what is real and what a dream image, where experience of reality touches belief and superstition. What does it mean that he wanted to call this book The True Light? Isn't the last light like the last train, which can be named from day to day, but not in absolute terms? Or is it the opposite of the first light, the hour of creation or birth, is it about destruction or death? It will all depend on the day, on the mood of the moment. Het is eigen aan de verbeelding van mensen dat ze in de natuurlijke omgeving tekens kunnen zien. Dat is betekenis geven: dingen interpreteren als een teken. Dat doen we voortdurend. De horizon einder noemen, terwijl we weten dat het land daarachter verdergaat. Een wolk dreigend noemen, het land onherbergzaam, een boom eenzaam, het licht onheilspellend, allemaal voorbeelden van hoe we de natuur, die in principe onverschillig staat tegenover de schepselen die erin rondlopen, karaktereigenschappen toekennen. Dit is het ware onderwerp van de kunst van Jan Vosters. Het is het grootse toneel waar hij in zijn element is. Het schijnbaar bekende raadselachtig maken, de vraag oproepen wat echt is en wat een droombeeld, waar werkelijkheidsbeleving raakt aan geloof en bijgeloof.0Wat betekent het dat hij dit boek Het ware licht wilde noemen? Is het laatste licht niet zoiets als de laatste trein, wel van dag tot dag te benoemen maar niet in absolute termen? Of is het toch de tegenhanger van het eerste licht, het scheppingsuur of de geboorte, gaat het over ondergang of de dood? Het zal allemaal afhangen van de dag, van de stemming van het moment.
