In his monograph on John Collier published in 1914, Walter Herries Pollock ventured a rhetorical guess at the origin of the by-then popular term 'problem picture': '1 can but hazard a theory that some critic heard somebody else, of abnormally dense intelligence, say words to this effect: "That picture puzzles me; it's quite a problem," and was suddenly struck by the unhappy thought that "problem-picture" would be something of a novel and effective phrase.
