Mettendo in dialogo 50 capolavori provenienti dal Kunsthistorisches Museum di Vienna realizzati da Francesco Bassano, Jan Brueghel, Pieter Claesz, Willem Claesz Heda, Jan Weenix, Gerard Dou, Evaristo Baschenis, Gasparo Lopez dei Fiori ed Elisabetta Marchioni, la sezione della mostra curata da Francesca Del Torre, Gerlinde Gruber e Sabine Pénot ricostruisce la storia del genere pittorico attraverso il confronto delle produzioni fiamminghe e italiane: è nel contesto geografico, culturale e politico dei Paesi Bassi, in particolare, che le nature morte si perfezionano e specializzano, declinandosi in alcune categorie, come quelle scientifiche con i mazzi di fiori, le vanitas o allegorie della caducità, le tavole apparecchiate, le nature morte religiose, le scene di caccia. Completa l'esposizione la sezione dedicata alla fotografia contemporanea, curata da Denis Curti, con gli scatti di Martin Parr, David LaChapelle, Robert Mapplethorpe, Araki, Franco Vimercati e Hans Op De Beeck, con opere che testimoniano come il tema della natura morta sia attuale ancora oggi.
