Da in den Einleitungskapiteln jeweils die kunsttheoretische Position der einzelnen Autoren behandelt und im Schlußkapitel ihr spezifisches Verhältnis zur Sprache analysiert wird, ergibt sich eine Darstellung von großer Geschlossenheit. Das Gesamtbild, das so zustande kommt und das sowohl einen historischen Aufriß der Romanentwicklung seit 1945 gibt als auch die wichtigsten Trends dieser Entwicklung bezeichnet, wird nicht durch summarische Autorenporträts, sondern durch detaillierte Einzelinterpretationen erreicht, die ein repräsentatives Spektrum des zeitgenössischen deutschen Romanschaffens beleuchten.
