Description
Vom späten Mittelalter bis zur vollständigen Verbreitung der Farbdrucktechnik der Chromolithografie um 1870 wurden Grafiken handkoloriert. Ausgehend von der Hervorhebung einzelner Buchstaben oder der Gestaltung von Seitenrändern entstanden im 16. Jahrhundert Werke in flott aufgepinselten Aquarell- und Gouachefarben, die sich aus den Grenzen der zugrunde liegenden Grafik befreiten. Nach botanischen Werken mit exquisiten Darstellungen zarter Blüten und Knospen fand die Illuminierung ihren Höhepunkt im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert. Erstmals wird nun dank sechs Wissenschaftlern die bislang unerforschte Welt des Handkolorits in der europäischen Druckgrafik über eine Zeitspanne von etwa 400 Jahren und mehrere Stilepochen hinweg fassbar.
