Nata come pubblicazione di seminari tenutisi fra il 2015 e il 2017 nella sede del Museo Hendrik Christian Andersen, su temi che intrecciano la filosofia e l'arte novecentesca, la raccolta si è trasformata in un'antologia nella quale sono confluiti i contributi di diversi autori, di alto profilo scientifico, non solo italiani, che hanno esplorato e messo a fuoco il rapporto fra riflessione teorica e pratica artistica. Quasi tutti i pensatori più rilevanti del XX secolo hanno scritto sugli artisti a loro vicini temporalmente e intellettualmente, da Sartre a Wittgenstein, da Foucault a Danto e le loro riflessioni sono state oggetto di attenzione così gli autori, che ne hanno messo in luce motivi, legami culturali e gusti personali, hanno illustrato una pagina importante della storia del secolo scorso, tracciando una linea di demarcazione che congiunge, in un cerchio ideale, attori (artisti) e pensatori (filosofi) in una comune vicenda intellettuale.
