Künstler sind und waren Vorreiter für ein empathisches Naturverhältnis. Der Katalog nimmt deshalb die individuellen Naturprozesse der Künstlerinnen und Künstler in den Blick. Ausgehend von mittelalterlichen Handschriften wird gezeigt, auf welche Art und Weise Sympathievorstellungen gegenüber der Natur im Expressionismus über die Nachkriegszeit bis in die 1970er Jahre fortlebten und wie insbesondere Gegenwartskünstler überlieferte Mikro- und Makrokosmos-Vorstellungen für die Gegenwart produktiv machen, um einen bewussteren Umgang mit der Natur zu finden.
