In dem Roman „Die Wallfahrer“, seinem Opus magnum, beschäftigte Carl Amery (1922 – 2005) sich mit der Wallfahrt zur Kirche „Unserer Lieben Frau“ in Tuntenhausen und der Suche nach Erlösung. Dabei verband er fast alle Themen, die er sonst in Einzeldarstellungen aufgriff: katholische Tradition, bayrische Geschichte, Ökologie, Science Fiction. Die Wallfahrtskirche in Tuntenhausen steht hier im Mittelpunkt eines Panoramas, das vier Jahrhunderte überspannt. Auf vier verschiedenen Pilgerpfaden bewegen sich skurrile Einsiedler, barocke Komödiantentruppen, cholerische Kapuziner, „Kreuzfahrer“ im 19. Jahrhundert, der Mörder von Kurt Eisner und viele andere. Der Roman „Die Wallfahrer“ setzt sich aus einer Vielzahl einzelner Geschichten zusammen, die auch stilistisch eine breites Spektrum ergeben.
