This book begins with a facsimile copy of William Withering's 1785 monograph, An Account of the Foxglove and Some of its Medical Uses. The author has added marginal notes (not footnotes) explaining Withering's 18th century terms and names for a modern audience. This is followed by three sections in which the author discusses: the foxglove as a flower and a medicinal herb; uses of the foxglove before Withering; Withering's biography and his discovery of the medicinal use of foxgloves, with statistical analysis of his 163 cases; and finally attitudes to the medicinal use of foxgloves in the 19th and 20th centuries. There is an extensive bibliography.
