The Giles, Alleghany, and Jackson Artillery

Description

The Giles Artillery, also known as Giles Light Artillery, was organized in 1861 under the command of Captain William W. McComas of the Virginia Light Artillery. It served as the Pearisburg Reserves, Company B of the Wise Legion Artillery of the Virginia Volunteers. In 1862 it became Captain David A. French's Company of the Virginia Light Artillery. It also served as Company D or Company B of Stark's Battalion of Reserve Artillery. The Alleghany Artillery, also known as the Alleghany Rough Artillery, enlisted in 1861 as Captain Joseph Carpenter's Company of the Virginia Light Artillery. It was also known as Company A, or Alleghany Light Infantry, of the 27th Regiment of the Virginia Infantry. In 1863 it became Captain John C. Carpenter's Company of the Virginia Light Artillery. The company served in R. Snowden Andrews', and later in Carter M. Braxton's, battalions of artillery. The Jackson Artillery was organized in 1862 under the command of Captain Wilfred Emory Cutshaw. It later became part of Carpenter's Company of the Virginia Light Artillery.
