Le projet de recherche s'est déroulé sur une période de deux ans au cours desquelles diverses structures de la halde sud à la Mine Doyen ont été échantillonnées pour évaluer l'impact de la présence de microorganismes acidophiles et ferro-oxydants sur la production de drainage minier acide. La friabilité des schistes à sériate qui composent une partie significative des stériles provoque une libération extensive de la pyrite qu'ils contiennent et expose ainsi des minéraux reactifs à l'oxydation chimique et biologique.
