Description
The Fontana project on the Little Tennessee River in western North Carolina was designed and constructed as one of the important planned multiple-purpose units in the TVA's unified program for the development of the Tennessee Valley. The Congress, December 17, 1941, authorized its construction as a part of TVA's third wartime emergency program. Construction began January 1, 1942; closure of the dam was made November 7, 1944; and the first of two 67,500-kilowatt-capacity generating units was placed in operation January 20, 1945, only 36.5 months after the start of construction, in time to be of considerable value in the closing phases of the war.
