Description
"Originally the Guild controlled trade in what was an important market town. And to keep the membership of this exclusive merchant's club up to date the town's burgesses met once every twenty years to have their names listed in the Guild Roll. By the time Preston began to grow into an important industrial town at the end of the eighteenth century the Guild had lost most of its old role in regulating trade ...Unlike practically every other guild in the country, Preston Guild survived and prospered."--Jacket.
