Kreuzberg ist in Deutschland durch alternative Bewegungen mit ausgeprägter Protestkultur und einen hohen Ausländeranteil bekannt. Das Stadtbild wird zu grossen Teilen von der so genannten "Kreuzberger Mischung"; bestimmt, einer Wohn- und Wirtschaftsstruktur aus Miethäusern mit Gewerbe im Hinterhof und Industrieansiedlungen. Weniger bekannt ist, dass der bedeutende Gartenkünstler Peter Joseph Lenne grossen Einfluss auf die Kreuzberger Stadtplanung hatte und seine Strassen- und Grünräume noch weithin erlebbar sind. Die Stadt des 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts trifft in Kreuzberg auf Sanierungsgebiete der 1960er und 1970er sowie die Stadtreparatur der 1980er Jahre.
