Growing up in the Free State Republic between its founding and the Boer War. Sophie was born Sophie Baumann and married Moritz Leviseur. The Baumanns were German Jews, important players in the founding of the Free State, originally from Kassel in Germany. The first square in Bloemfontein was Baumann Square, until the name was erased under apartheid.
