Description
A story picture book with wonderfully detailed lithographs by Ruth Gannett, all of which were drawn on stone. Story line is about a childless hippo couple - - wife wants a baby, husband doesn't. One day a baby appears on their porch in a basket. The husband tries to take it to the police station but neighbors think he has stolen the baby. A mixed up adventure follows with Mr. Hippo being arrested. Baby will only calm down when Mr. Hippo holds him, and eventually he gives in and the couple have a new baby. All the characters in the book are hippos, dressed in 1890-1900 style. No cars, fire engine is horse drawn. A fun book.
