Description
Our Lady's Church in Copenhagen appears as a collective work designed by the architect C.F. Hansen and with decoration by the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. The building's austere, antique-inspired forms speak the same language as the monumental white marble statues and reliefs, and the Christ statue in the apse over the altar has had the lead role for almost 200 years - both in the church room and in the liturgy of the church. I 'KRISTUS. Thorvaldsen's statue in Our Lady's Church focuses on both dimensions, the aesthetic and the liturgical. Based on an interdisciplinary approach, art historian Margrethe Floryan analyzes and interprets the Christ statue, its appearance and significance in the interaction with the other almost 30 Thorvaldsen sculptures in Our Lady's Church and in relation to the church space as a framework for the service. The book is also about the creation of Our Lady's Church, about Thorvaldsen's assumptions and sources of inspiration and about his other church works. Based on Grundtvig's theology and current ritual practice, Margrethe Floryan argues for an aesthetic-liturgical reinterpretation of Thorvaldsen's Christ statue. 'CHRIST. Thorvaldsen's statue in Our Lady's Church 'is the first major book publication about Thorvaldsen as a church artist Vor Frue Kirke i København fremstår som et samlet værk tegnet af arkitekten C.F. I 'KRISTUS.
