The Darlings are the poorest family at Marlowe, though their father is a professor of Ancient Civilizations there, and they struggle with fitting in, a serious shortage of cash (by Marlowe standards, anyway), and Wendy's new boyfriend, socialite golden-boy Connor Wirth. But soon, a mysterious book appears at Marlowe and with it a new Resident Advisor with a murky past. The Book of Gates opens the door to other worlds, to Egyptian myths long thought impossible, and to the home of an age-old darkness, an ancient child-thief, a beautiful governess that refuses to let go.
