UNDER OUR FEET No matter where we are on the earth there is rock below us. Even if we are on a big ship in the middle of the ocean there is rock under us, beneath the bottom of the sea. On land the rock below us is often covered with soil. There was no soil here when the earth was very young. Soil is made mostly of broken-up rock, and the rock had to have time to break up.
