In this first of three prefaces Cassian compares The Institutes and the first ten books of The Conferences (if we are to credit 2 praef. 2 it would appear that he had not yet planned on writing the remaining fourteen; but cf. p. 397), speaking of the former as touching on "the external and visible life of the monks" and of the latter as dealing with "the invisible character of the inner man" (1 praef. 5).
