Aby Warburg zählt zu den bekanntesten deutschsprachigen Kunstwissenschaftlern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Seine Studien zur Antikenrezeption in der Renaissance, durch die er Weltruhm erwarb, haben an Aktualität und Erkenntniswert nicht eingebüßt und üben nach wie vor eine faszinierende Anziehungskraft auf die Forschung aus. Warburg hielt am 5. Oktober 1905 auf der 48. Versammlung Deutscher Philologen und Schulmänner in Hamburg einen Vortrag über Albrecht Dürer und die italienische Antike. Im Zentrum seiner Ausführung stand Dürers Tod des Orpheus von 1494. In dieser Zeichnung hatte Warburg verschiedene antike Vorbilder entdeckt und stellte deshalb die These auf, dass sich die Künstler der Frührenaissance in Italien und Deutschland aus dem Formenrepertoire der Antike bedienten. Mit diesen sogenannten Pathosformeln ging Aby Warburg in die Kunstgeschichte ein.
