Die einzigartigen Monumente der Ruinenstadt Palmyra faszinieren die Menschheit seit Jahrhunderten. Touristen wie Wissenschaftler reisten nach Syrien, um die durch Römer, Griechen und Perser geprägte Kultur zu bewundern bis der sogenannte 'Islamische Staat' das Weltkulturerbe zerstörte. Vor dem Hintergrund dieser katastrophalen Situation stellt das Wallraf jetzt die Frage 'Palmyra. Was bleibt?'. In seiner gleichnamigen Ausstellung (26.2. - 8.5.2016) zeigt das Museum vierzig Zeichnungen von Louis-François Cassas (1756-1827), die der französische Künstler, Archäologe und Architekt im Jahre 1785 vor Ort anfertigte. Seine Arbeiten spiegeln noch heute auf atemraubende Weise die einstige Schönheit und Faszination der antiken Monumente wider.
