C'est l'histoire d'un pays qui a réussi à perdre deux guerres en faisant croire qu'il les avait gagnées, et ensuite à perdre son empire colonial en faisant comme si cela ne changeait rien à son importance. This is the story of an Emma Bovary of the seventies who left her unhappy marriage. It is the story of a man who became a sensualist in response to the separation, and became a cynical father due to a broken heart. This is the story of an older brother who has done everything possible to not turn into his parents, and a younger brother who did everything possible not to turn out like his big brother. This is the story of a melancholy boy growing up in a melancholy country, raised by parents depressed by the failure of their marriage. It's the story a country that has managed to lose two wars by pretending it had won and then lost its colonial empire and acted as if it did not matter. This is the story of a new humanity, or how Catholic monarchists have become globalized capitalist. Such is the life I lived: a French novel.
