L'acquisto ha posto le basi per una ricerca approfondita sull'opera che permette ora di rispondere a diverse domande, a partire dalla più ovvia: si tratta di un Autoritratto o piuttosto di un Ritratto? E se è così, chi ne è l'autore? Per chi fu eseguito? A quale tipo di gusto collezionistico appartiene? Quando fu presentato per la prima volta? Cosa ci restituisce della cultura del suo tempo? Nato da uno studio condotto su fonti e documenti coevi, il testo restituisce i risultati della ricerca svolta sul dipinto, finalizzata a ricostruirne la storia e il significato, ricollocandolo nella cultura del suo tempo.
